Waking up to the sound of His voice

‘I’m fully satisfied as with a rich dinner, my mouth speaks praise with joy on my lips – whenever I ponder you on my bed, whenever I meditate on you in the middle of the night’ Psalm 63. 4-6

I had an interesting dream the other night – it was about Lonnie Frisbie of the Jesus People Movement. Although he died in 1993, in the dream he was still alive today, but had been totally forgotten about. God showed me the legacy he had left in terms of the impact he had on John Wimber and the Vineyard movement, yet he is largely unknown and not really honoured. He was holding very small gatherings with 5/6 people and I had this intense desire to go and hang out with him in these meetings with the remnant of revival that he was carrying. I woke up thinking that the revivals of old are not dead, they’re just forgotten and dormant, hidden by a spiritual amnesia and blanket of slumber.

There’s something about remembering what God once did, holding it within your heart and allowing that fire to awaken something new today. The day after I had that dream I was on the train passing through Bradford, the city where Smith Wigglesworth lived. As the train pulled in, sitting on the platform was the spitting image of Smith Wigglesworth; an old Yorkshire gent, moustache and all just looking at me. For a split second as I looked at him Smith Wigglesworth stared right back at me and God said to me “Smith Wigglesworth isn’t dead either.” The anointing that Smith carried is alive today. It isn’t dead, although so many churches act like it, it is just forgotten and dormant. We might remember the person but the church has forgotten the anointing he carried, the Presence, the Fire on his life.

Wakey wakey

Several years ago while we were youth workers in Antioch Church in Llanelli, we were holding our usual Wednesday night youth meeting. We had just had a conference where the youth had been particularly impacted about revival and God had started to really stir something on their hearts. I asked the youth group whether God had spoken to them anything that week. I had given them a word the previous week that they were going to be given new shields of faith and I was interested if anything had happened. Most shrugged “no…” but a young 15 year old girl looked and said “Yes… actually… In the middle of the night God woke me up and I heard him say “Go to Moriah Chapel, (the place where the 1904 Welsh revival started) and say ‘Wakey wakey’ to the angel there…”

Louise told me and the rest of the youth group what had happened that week; that she had gone to the chapel the next day after she had been woken up in the middle of the night by God. The chapel happened to be next to her sixth form college. When she got there she stood looking at Moriah Chapel deliberating about what to do. There was a bus stop filled with people next to it. She looked at the bus stop and back at Moriah Chapel and whispered “wakey wakey”. God spoke to her in that moment and said “Is that how much you want revival??” so challenged and even while people in the bus stop watched, she yelled “WAKEY WAKEY!!”

The story of what happened next has spread like a wild fire around the world. Louise watched as a  15 /20 foot angel yawned and stepped out of the chapel. It then spoke to her. It said “I am the angel of the 1904 revival and you’ve just woken me up” Louise stood there thinking ‘what on earth…!!!’ and the angel said “I fell asleep because people stopped calling out for revival”. The angel then wandered away up the road while Louise stood there gob smacked.

Several prophets have met the angel since. One prophet bumped into the angel unaware of what had happened, and asked the angel what it was doing. The angel replied “a 15 year old girl just woke me up.”

God woke Louise up with the sound of His voice in the middle of the night and brought her into a supernatural encounter which awoke something that had been dormant since 1904.

I don’t believe we have seen the full manifestation of what that angel is about today but in the months that followed the angelic experience our youth group went through an amazing time of encounter with the Holy Spirit. We experienced physical healings for the first time, we were opened up to the supernatural; gold and silver dust became common and other angelic encounters happened quite frequently. Some kids from the local community came along and were saved. It got to the point where teenagers who had never been to the prayer room before, came in and were falling out under the Presence of God as soon as they were prayed for. One kid screamed and ran out the room we met in as his eyes opened to the angels there. He physically saw them. Amazing events that opened up my life to a whole new world. It has marked the last 10 years of my life.

I believe that the angel from Moriah Chapel was commissioned for Awakening in 1904 and it still is today. It hasn’t abandoned its position (Jude 1.6). A well known minister in the US encountered the angel recently and it said to him “Wakey Wakey is my name, that is what I was commissioned for – awakening”. In the lead up to the 1904 revival Evan Roberts had a season of intense visitation in the night. Such a heavy presence of God would rest in his room and would wake him up night after night. God would wake him up with an intensity of His Presence, enough that could shake the nation and would speak with this General of the future.

It is funny how quickly we forget what God did for a nation. Spiritual amnesia causes us to forget what He did. In the dream about Lonnie, spiritual amnesia caused people to forget the anointing Lonnie walked in. Spiritual amnesia is like a toxic fog of hopelessness, confusion and doubt which comes to put out the fire and abort the promises of God over our lives. Spiritual amnesia ultimately leads to deception. It happened in the Garden “Did God really say…?”

The Israelites were constantly reminded in the Old Testament- ‘Do not forget the Lord, remember what I have done for you…’ King David would lie awake in the night hours and remember the stories of old. It would stir his heart and awaken something new within him.

Why am I talking about this now? Because I believe that God wants to bring us into fulfilment and awakening. There is a significant connection between remembering and Awakening – One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to help us remember what Jesus said (John 14.6). Why? because we have been given every Spiritual Blessing in the Heavenly places, we have been given Fullness in Christ. We are New Creation beings but have forgotten where we came from. This truth can get shrouded in an amnesia which chains up our inheritance and stops us from being able to walk out fulfilment… “Did God really say…?” But when we begin to remember, when we begin to honour what God once said, God can ignite this with a fire that burns away amnesia’s toxic fog of doubt, confusion and deception. Remembering the sound of His voice awakens us to a new reality of Heaven today.

In the remembering God’s voice wakens us to a door of the supernatural where we begin to understand things which Heaven has never forgotten. Heaven can’t forget because they are in the present reality of it now. It is not a dead memory, it is a present reality, a fire that constantly burns.

The angels remember the day when the Presence of awe and wonder began to fall on the meetings Evan Roberts lead. But more than that they rest in the present reality of it at the feet of Jesus today. They know what Evan Roberts tapped into. Heaven remembers, it has a record of what it was like when Wesley began to stir himself with the fire and watch as the people began to gather around him in a realm of Heaven. But it is more than a story it is a living fire, accessible through an open door today which Jesus opened through his life and death. God remembers the Might which Smith Wigglesworth operated in and the desire that exploded out of him to see people free from infirmity, that Gift of Faith is freely available today.

Visit encounters of old, remember what God once did and let him awaken you with His voice to fire today, fresh fire, fire we have never experienced before, fire that the revivalists and saints of old walked in; Apostolic Fire, that has been dormant since the days of Cuthbert’s wild fire revival. But its not just an old fire, it’s alive today, birthing something new, something for our day, something not been seen before on the earth; something unique. This anointing is not dead. His voice is whispering “wake up to reality”.

Northern Glory with Stuart Watkins

Northern Glory with Stuart Watkins | Cielo, Garforth | 7.30pm

We are excited to have Stuart Watkins with us for Northern Glory this month. Stuart has been on the leadership team of Antioch Church (a Pioneer Church) in Llanelli for many years and has a proven track record as a Prophet. He has ministered in Eastern Europe extensively, working with local churches and speaking at leader’s conferences where he has seen God work amazingly. Stuart has written a book on the prophetic which has been translated in Bulgarian.

He has incredible stories of God’s supernatural power working in his life and those around him – if you have heard story of the teenager who met the ‘Wakey wakey’ angel from the 1904 Welsh Revival – that was his daughter. This will definitely be a significant time that you don’t want to miss!

Here is a cool testimony from a conference Stuart spoke at:

‘I was taking a week of meetings in a church in Bucharest. First night while speaking I noticed a few guys in the front row looking at their hands. I stopped speaking and asked them what was going on. At first they did not really want to say but as I looked I could see oil on their hands. They looked a little surprised as this had never happened to them before. As these guys put their hands near to others the same thing began to happen – oil and also gold dust started appearing on their hands. The meetings were being streamed live over the internet around Europe, mainly to Romanian people. During a meeting a young girl called in to say as they were watching the meeting oil was running down the walls of the room they were in. “What should we do?!!” they were asking. I felt to tell them to take some of the oil put it on their hands and go outside and pray for people. This they did and reported back that people were getting healed as they prayed for them.’

northern-glory-healing-tentWe had a great time at David’s Tent over the summer!

Such a privilege to part of something so special which God is doing in the UK. We took a team down made up with some crazy radicals from Sheffield, Leeds and South Wales and ran a ministry tent during the festival. We had some amazing encounters and some remarkable miracles took place. The main thing was the tangible presence of God that people said they walked into when they came into the tent. God brought lots of people to tears and touched many people’s hearts.

Here are some testimonies from our ministry tent:

‘Dear Northern Team, my husband and I went to David’s Tent and although your prayer schedule was totally booked you still managed to fit me in. God’s presence was so mighty and real I felt so light- may I say light as a feather. I almost felt I could fly. Prior to going my right foot was swollen and the big toe was in considerable pain. I have been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis for the last 27 years but whilst Fiona and Heather were praying my foot felt free of all pain and swelling- the reason I say free of swelling is because sandals I was wearing, actually had room for my foot to move without pressure and rubbing. I believe I am healed! Big thank you Northern Glory team for your dedication and commitment.’

Other healings included:  – a woman with swollen lymphs in her neck had them visibly shrink within a couple of minutes prayer, A woman’s abdominal pain was healed, someone with ligament damage had all the pain instantly go, a person with neck strain was instantly healed, back pain was healed, a person with a damaged wrist instantly healed. One woman had a locked shoulder, she couldn’t raise her arm above her head before she came in the tent and was in pain – after 5 mins of prayer there was no pain and she could put her arm fully in the air.

Many people also came for prophetic words and different people commented that there was a Spirit of Prophecy that was resting in the atmosphere over the tent. The accuracy of the words given by the team was very high. A couple came in and I instantly got the word ‘Lily of the Valley’, turned out that Lily was the girl’s name. The team were getting people’s  places of work, their actual house numbers, business ideas that people were actually involved in doing, even naming the different over seas countries that people’s children lived in.

It was pretty amazing to see God work so powerfully and touch people’s hearts.

Brexit, Trump and Troubled Times?

‘Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.’ Voltaire.

I’ve grown up with certainties that we’ve taken for granted, norms which we thought would always be there – stable governments in the West, security, peace, democratic leadership in power. In the last few weeks what struck me was the fragility of it all and the fact that these norms have only been that way for 60 or so years.

In my last blog I prophesied that the Wild Winds of Change were blowing across the UK and that Big Ben would be headline news. This  happened with Big Ben and now unprecedented change has swept right across the country and Government with Brexit. We have never lived in a time like it. Some people have suggested that I prophesied Brexit, you can judge for yourself here.

Big Ben is a political sign and what I said was that God was ‘interrupting business as usual’. Without doubt his has happened within politics.

However I disagree with the reaction of some other Prophets to Brexit, either saying that God caused it in order to set us free from a demonic stronghold in the EU to see revival, or in dismissing the job-loss and threat of an economic down turn with its negative impact on communities because it is God’s will; a head in the sand, everything is going to be alright type mentality.

I believe that God’s heart is for the poor and marginalised communities, those who have already been negatively affected by Brexit because of job loss, those who will go on to lose their jobs and the 1 million people relying on food banks. He is not sacrificing these people to set us free from a demonic EU agenda. Jesus sacrificed Himself the first time for our freedom and that was enough.

Was Brexit God’s Will?

It is interesting that people will on the one hand say how Brexit was God’s will and yet defend it for being a democratic referendum where the will of the people was expressed. Whether it was the will of God or not, it was the will of the people in a democracy that voted, either in protest at the Government or for other reasons. If it was the will of the people then it is possible we made a mistake…

BUT the will of people revealed some important issues in our nation that is absolutely on the heart of God to heal- the deep divisions in our society, the fact many feel their voice is not listened to, the effects of austerity on communities. So whether God caused Brexit or not, I do believe that God makes all things work for the Good (Romans 8.28) and will use it to bring healing to our nation.

‘The One World Globalist Agenda’

Tax Collectors vs Zealots

I’ve heard many say that the reason why they approve of Brexit and Trump is because both of these things oppose the ‘One World Globalist agenda’; the idea that there are hidden forces at work in the EU and across the world to bring about a world wide demonically controlled agenda. However I think that to get sucked in to this kind of issue is to make the same mistake as the Zealots.

If there was ever a Government with a One World Globalist agenda with liberal views, extolling a false God it was with the Roman Empire. They were anti Christ enough to kill the Christ! BUT! Jesus did not confront these political issues in his day in order to walk in absolute freedom and authority. He had both ends of the political spectrum as disciples – tax collectors (Rome) and zealots (anti Rome). His mission was not political; he focused on the Kingdom.

So even when you look at revival history around the world, eg underground church in China, which started in the 90s it was not stopped or controlled by the politics of the country or the ruling spirit of communism. The Kingdom is higher than all that. The same is true of every other revival in history. In actual fact it is the other way round – underground Revival influences reform – for example from Wesley to Wilberforce.  Revival brings transformation, we don’t need political transformation to bring revival.

So I believe that Brexit did not need to happen in order for there to be revival  in the UK. We don’t need to be set free from a One World globalist agenda. That is more conspiracy and spurious prophecy than Gospel reality. Plus it doesn’t match up with my experience. We have been seeing God do amazing stuff, physical healing and people impacted by the Glory for 10 years before Brexit!

Peace through the EU

In actual fact the EU has brought peace and stability to Europe for the longest time in European history. A weakened EU caused by Brexit could bring about decreased security, increased tension, disruption and war. It could cause a domino effect of change across Europe weakening the unity and stability of the continent. All this in the face of the growing threat of Russia and ISIS.

Tribalism and Right Wing Nationalism

Brexit revealed the undercurrent of right wing nationalism and racism in our country. I believe that this is part of a global rise in ‘tribalism’, something which is also happening in the US with the popularity of Trump. This is a back lash against globalisation’s ability to chip away at a nation’s identity.

I think that the UK is in the middle of an identity crises and the US is headed that way so are turning to nationalism and tribalism. Why is this a problem? With tribalism comes fear of the ‘other’, those of a different tribe. It creates walls within society leading to ignorance, prejudice and ultimately discrimination. It lead can lead to national isolationism. I think it has the potential to affect the United States’ place as a global leader because of Trump’s desire to internalise and become insular if he gets to power.

It also creates disunity among the nations. Trump has already challenged the US’s involvement in NATO if he becomes President. (What ever you think of NATO- it is keeping Putin in check). A weakened NATO could allow Russia to creep into eastern Europe.

So with Brexit and Trump there is a weakened EU and the potential for a weakened NATO in the face of a growing threat from Russia… the EU and NATO could be further weakened still.

There is increasing support for the far right and left in Europe which would affect these issues. Marine le Pen’s right wing Front National are anti EU, would leave NATO and would want France to forge a strong relationship with Russia. Spain has the rise of the left wing with Podemos, possibly because Fascism is still in living memory for them, however Podemos is still anti EU.

Creeping Russia, opportunistic terrorists, weakened EU and NATO AND a weakened UK if Scotland leaves. In 1914 there was a bonfire created in Europe, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark that lit the bonfire and caused WW1. Today 102 years later it is possible a  new bonfire is being erected with these events, awaiting a simple spark that could have devastating effects.

The Cult of Personality

In the US, UK and Russia we are seeing the rise of the cult of personality; a strong leader who manages to create a movement around himself which transcends his own party. The people who support him are often aligned to the individual leader than the party. Trump, Bernie Sanders, Corbyn  all created movements around themselves, the support of which transcends their actual political party. With Russia it’s Putin.

If successful they can be good (Civil Rights Movement) If the movement is surrounding a person with proven and trustworthy principles it can be powerful. The dangers are obvious if abused however. The accountability that the political party normally provides can be lost and weaknesses in the leader are overlooked or hidden. It is therefore open to abuse and manipulation and history has taught us that authoritarian leadership with weak accountability is a dangerous thing…

With the Labour party you are seeing an attempt for it to return to its radical roots as a labour movement with Corbyn. It is the institution vs the movement; the institution not recognising the movement and trying to stop it and yet because of the momentum, failing to do so. Corbyn and Sanders have stood for the same stuff for 30 years so their agendas are easy to see (although I’m not saying I support them. I don’t think Corbyn would make a good PM – my opinion not a prophecy).

Trump is a different kettle of fish and more concerning. Trump appears to be a demagogue, someone who will say anything to be popular and will flip flop between what he believes – (pro life, pro choice, pro life) according to whatever will make him be most popular. Time will tell. He has created a movement around himself which seems to be based on fear and fuelled by anger. He is riding the wave of tribalism with his America First ideals. His comments could be divisive, and some appear to be authoritarian in nature- “I alone can solve…”  He has advocated breaking the law – (apparently sarcastically) telling Russia to hack in to Clinton’s emails – which is a national security risk and has said he will use water boarding on terrorists and kill their families. This is against international law and Human Rights.

There is a concern with, what appears to be, the ease in which he is willing to break or change laws to get something done.

Propaganda has seemed to reappear too. With the cult of personality there is danger of mythologising the leader. Prophecy can play a part in this and has done in Christian circles with Trump.

Trump, Prophecy and Mythmaking

There have been a lot of prophecies around Trump.
The most popular are:

  • He is ‘God’s ‘trumpet’ call to America
  • A prophetic Cyrus, who will bring freedom to the Church,
  • A wrecking ball to the politically correct spirit
  • He will become a Christian when in office
  • Some just saying he is God’s choice to be the next President

The question is whether any of these actually relate to reality. There is a fine line between prophecy and fantasy. Prophetic dreams do not over rule the Gospel.

The key check is obviously the teaching of Jesus. Matthew 5: ‘You have heard that it was said eye for an eye, but I tell you turn the other cheek… love your enemies and pray for those who hurt you’ or other teaching like ‘love your neighbour as yourself and pray for those that hurt you’ or the Good Samaritan. Ignoring the Gospel opens the door to deception.

So lets take each one in turn:

Trump, God’s trumpet call to America

If Trump is a trumpet in the hand of God then that means God endorses the things he says. Look here to see if you agree (calling someone a fat pig, appearing to mock a disabled reporter, saying that Mexicans coming in the country are rapists, calling Megan Kelly a bimbo). It also suggests that God endorses the policies he would enact if elected.

Saying he would bring back water boarding ‘and worse’ and take out their families is anti Gospel, it opposes the teaching of Jesus. It is also illegal. Trump has said that the military won’t refuse his commands even if they are illegal by international standards. This sounds authoritarian. No room for loving enemies here?

A prophetic Cyrus who will set the church free

Cyrus was the Persian King who made a decree to set the Hebrews free. It has been said Trump will do this to the church in the US. Wishful thinking? This sort of prophecy just smacks of an Old Testament narrative and makes the same mistake the Zealots made – thinking that freedom for the church will come in a political package. The underground Chinese church did not wait for political change to bring them revival.

Plus this sort of prophecy could only be proven after the election, if wrong it has serious consequences.

Trump will have a Damascus road experience while in office

Maybe he will. But you wouldn’t recommend that your daughter marry an abusive alcoholic in the hope that he becomes a Christian after the wedding. Even if someone prophesied it. That is just stupid and the risks are too great. Plus after Paul’s experience he took 10 years out before assuming any position of authority. Plus ANY leader could have a conversion experience while being President, even Clinton…

A Wrecking Ball to the Politically Correct Spirit

Is he dealing with the politically correct spirit in the USA? There is a difference between political correctness and just being nasty, is there not? Some of the comments made are not going against the politically correct spirit, but are just considered brutish by many people. Even if he is a ‘wrecking ball against the politically correct spirit’ is this even a good or helpful qualification for the office of the President? No.

Will Donald Trump make America great again?

Lets be honest, sometimes Trump is hilarious but that doesn’t mean he would be a good President or that I would trust him to carry out what he says he will do.

True prophesy reveals the heart of a good God and true prophets embody that message. For Martin Luther King, a true prophet – he embodied the message of loving his enemies. This came to be iconic and is one of the things that marks  America’s greatness.

(The Irony of American evangelicalism calling for ISIS to be bombed/ killed/ tortured – Martin Luther King the Christian would have disagreed and yet Malcolm X, the Muslim would have supported violent methods)

I’m not sure that Donald Trump is revealing the heart of a good God now, and will in all probability continue down this road if elected.

The Christian support of Trump shrouded in myth making prophesy has the potential to open a door to discrimination in the US which was shut through the life of MLK. This time it could target Muslims.

Desire for the Authentic

However what is clear to see is that there is a desire in people for something authentic. People want the real deal. They are sick of an establishment which is only interested in preserving itself. They are beginning to lose trust in it. They want leaders where what you see is what you get. People want something genuine, something radical and something real. They don’t just want this in politicians but it is what they want from the church.

The tangible Presence of God is the only thing which will quench this thirst in the world. Only love will satisfy. The world needs Pioneers and Leaders who carry the real thing; the manifest Presence of God; who can release encounters that bring love and truth, that bring the lost home; leaders who reveal the heart of a loving Father. We all want the real thing.

Prophets Shape the Future

Troubling times? Times like these have given birth to great leaders who have walked as peacemakers through the storms.

I think this is the challenge to the Prophets – to be the authentic answer in the world; to call forth a future of Hope and stability in the midst of all these challenges – Prophets who won’t just bury their heads in the sand and say everything will be OK but ones that face the issues of our day with courage.

Prophets must embody the message of love – to your neighbours and enemies; who can father the lost and father nations, Prophets that carry nations in their hearts. Prophets who have influence because of the Hope they carry, that in the midst of fear and chaos they have a Gospel which is unshakable. Prophets that know the voice of God and the power of speaking His words into difficult situations.

We need prophets, but not in the vein of the Zealots – those who have put their Hope in a political change but Prophets bearing the image of Christ, who love enemies, carry revival, who decree freedom and release transformation.

This is what I see happening and am calling for in both the UK and US. Love can shape the future, it must, creation demands it.  In troubled times the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.

The Winds of Change are ringing the Wild Bells

‘Love is a dangerous word to those who fear losing control. Love is a wild wind and no one knows which way it blows’ Jason Upton

Big Ben

The wild winds of change are rattling through the UK once more, silencing the old religious answers and ways of doing stuff. Wild bells of fulfilment are ringing again.

A few weeks ago at the last Northern Glory I prophesied that we are in the season of ‘fulfilment’. I prophesied that as a sign of this Big Ben would be on the main news within a couple of weeks.

Sure enough a few weeks later Big Ben was in the main news because the bell is being silenced for several months for repair work. (Obviously I didn’t know this when I prophesied it). It is first time repair work like this is to be done on it in 160 years. Read about it here.

So what’s the significance of all this then? God’s voice rings louder than the noise from the age old traditions of man. God is interrupting business as usual to challenge the ways we have done stuff before. We love relying on our trusted and traditional formulas so we import the models, the programs, the things that seem to work in revivals all around the world, we get the books and listen to the podcasts, whatever works elsewhere, we’ll try it! Everything except the actual whack.  We love to rely on the manmade instead of the mystical. It can hide our unbelief!

All the noise made by our striving is being silenced. In the space the sound of the voice of God at rest, in fulfilment and living in Grace is being heard. It’s the sound of the Wild Bells from Heaven. It is time for us to get whacked, get a bit of the anointing and pioneer something new which will have global impact.

God is speaking and it’s the sound of fulfilment that is ringing out. It is calling the wild fire prophets to attention and the crazy apostles to wake up. It is sounding to those who have dared to believe there’s a different way, to those have believed in promises. The sound of the Father’s faithfulness to fulfil his promises can be heard again. The bells of fulfilment are ringing out to the prophetic promises that are hanging over the UK.

Simeon is a symbol for our time. God started to speak to me about Simeon and I messaged a prophet friend of mine who said they too had been thinking about Simeon that same day.

Simeon was a prophet waiting on the fulfilment of God’s promises in Luke 2. His name means ‘he has heard’.  He was a man the Spirit was on. He lived in the anointing. He had heard and seen something different, something wild from Heaven which had stirred his soul to believe; he was filled with a Joy and anticipation that got him whacked. He had experienced something powerful enough to determine his life and lived to see the fulfilment of it. When the baby Jesus turned up in the temple Simeon announced ‘Sovereign Lord as you have promised… My eyes have seen your salvation…which you have prepared for in the sight of all nations.’ Simeon lived to see fulfilment and the faithfulness of God.

It is interesting to compare him to Zechariah, John the Baptist’s father. Both men eventually saw the fulfilment of prophecies. Both men saw something, Zechariah had an angelic visitation from Gabriel about the same events but responded in unbelief.  Zechariah couldn’t believe there was something different to business as usual and like Big Ben was silenced. Simeon however, lived in the Spirit and caught a glimpse of something which would affect nations, he met Jesus.

Jesus was and is fulfilment, he embodies fulfilment. He wasn’t just a Prophet but was the fulfilment of the Prophetic Word.  Jesus says of himself in Matthew that He came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets. Galatians 4 says ‘But when the fulfilment of the time came, God sent his Son.’ Hebrews describes it as being the ‘culmination of the ages’. So in the incarnation you have God coming, bringing fulfilment, answers, breakthrough. He is the Manifestation of Fulfilment. It is in the Father’s very nature that He is faithful to fulfil His Promises and so Jesus is God’s answer, Jesus embodies God’s faithfulness. He is the embodiment of fulfilment.

Jesus is the sound spoken from the Father’s lips. He is the sound of the wild fire of God’s love. He is the sound of fulfilment.

Fulfilment is walking next to you. But you won’t believe it until you see it. I love the story of the guys on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. They were walking filled with disappointment, downcast, thinking the promises they had believed in were over, Jesus had failed, it was all a lie. Yet Jesus, having overcome death, resurrected and living in the fulfilment of all things and was standing right next to them. Jesus began to speak and they started to hear a different sound from Heaven. As they listened to his voice their eyes opened to see Jesus face to face – the Manifestation of their desires right before them. The Fire on the voice of God burned in their hearts. It burned fulfilment and the breakthrough of Jesus into them. It burned through the dark clouds of their disappointment to bring breakthrough to their hearts. This caused them to enter into fulfilment.

There’s a different sound from Heaven ringing out. God is speaking and His voice carries the wild Fire of His love that will burn in your heart. It manifests fulfilment to the promises He has spoken. It brings the Wild Fire of breakthrough to rest in our lives so that we can say like Simeon, ‘As you have promised… now my eyes have seen…’ The face of Jesus is being revealed and is being branded into our hearts. This is causing the manifestation and release of fulfilment to the promises over our lives. Promises are going to be fulfilled right in front of our eyes.

The manifestation of fulfilment

Wesley is a guy who walked in fulfilment, a true prophet, when he walked around he brought the Wild Fire of breakthrough. He embodied fulfilment in that he walked in the accomplishments of Jesus; authority, power and lived in Christ’s breakthrough. He had an encounter with Jesus which ignited his heart with a Wild Fire – this lead him to say his now famous phrase ‘my heart was strangely warmed’. It was this fire that people gathered to see in the thousands. They climbed trees to catch a glimpse of this guy to be warned by other people that they would fall out under the power of God. Thousands would be gathered, shaking under the shadow of the Fire that Wesley carried. He truly impacted this nation. He said ‘catch on fire and others will come to see you burn’.

I believe fulfilment looks different for different people, obviously we each have promises from God that are different and will be for different areas of life.

But I believe that one of the things that is coming is the same Fire that affected Wesley. The sound of Heaven, wild bells ringing out is releasing this Wild Fire. Two guys on the road to Emmaus had an encounter with the embodiment of fulfilment and it burned a breakthrough in to their hearts. Jesus spoke and it warmed their hearts like Wesley.

So to try and summarise what God is saying here:

  • God is challenging the traditional religious ways of doing stuff that come from the business as usual type mindset.
  • Zechariah and Simeon are symbolic of this time. Zechariah responded to the new with unbelief and was silenced. Simeon lived in the anointing and responded with faith… ‘as you have promised… now my eyes have seen… which you have prepared in the sight of all nations…’ He was privileged to see something in advance of nations.
  • We are in a time of fulfilment.
  • The voice of God will speak like a fire into disappointment and discouragement.
  • Jesus is the embodiment of fulfilment and He is causing the fulfilment of promises to appear in our lives.
  • Fulfilment will burn like a wild fire in our hearts so we can walk in it.
  • Fulfilment looks like different things but one aspect of it is the fresh manifesation of the John Wesley fire.

Fulfilment is not far off, His name is Jesus and He is standing next to you. He is upholding and sustaining your life.  His Fire will encounter you with resurrection reality. God is faithful to fulfil His promises. Listen to his voice, the sound of fulfilment will burn away your disappointment and discouragement. Be one ‘who has heard’ so that you can live in fulfilment. His Words will brand your heart with breakthrough.

What do you see?

what do you seeIt’s funny hearing people talk like “We need to bring the Kingdom of God into the secular world” or even “How can we build the Kingdom of God?!” Secular world? What’s that then? You are going to build God’s Kingdom for him? Good luck trying that! (Genesis 1.1 is a clue).

I am so grateful that wherever I go I am permanently surrounded by the Kingdom and Glory of God. He is everywhere, He is all around us. (Matt 3.2, Matt 10.7) Luke 17.21 says ‘The Kingdom of God is within you (in your hearts) and among (surrounding you).’ AMP

His Presence is part of every aspect of our lives, He has permanently invaded our world, it is not a new thing, He has always been here. He has fully entangled Himself within our created order and He doesn’t regret it. He is entwined within our lives and He knew what He was getting Himself into.

It’s not that God is here within creation, standing around feeling awkward. He has intermingled himself within the fabric of our humanity; flesh and blood. He became one with the substance of human skin and bone. God became man; the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

And since then our own humanity has become the gateway and window for Jesus Christ. We are the human tabernacles of His Glory. There is absolutely no separation between your life and Heaven. Your flesh radiates Glory.

How can we have a ‘normal’ perspective on life knowing this? We look as people who have died and become One with Christ; lifted up to a new perspective and brand new reality. We have been raised with Christ. He has seated us within the ecstatic worship and cosmic party of the Trinity; within the centre of Heavenly Bliss and Perfection, at the centre of union and intimacy with our Creator, surrounded and pressed in by angels. What a rave!

Get a free buzz from that reality and your perspective will permanently change. No longer can you have sight filled with the darkness of lack and unbelief, but a vision overcome with the light and fullness of Christ. Not your situation. God wants to permanently wreck your paradigm and shift your mindset from “almost done” to “It is finished.” Something happens to your sight when you believe. You go from being overwhelmed by the problems you see to being transfixed by the answer. You are filled with Christ and the Hope of Glory. It is a power that brings transformation.

It happened to Elisha’s servant (2 Kings 6.17) His eyes were opened to reality and it changed his perspective. Totally surrounded by Angels; it freaked him out.

The angels understand, they can see. In Isaiah 6.3 they declare ”the whole earth is full of His Glory!’, not one day but is… I seem to keep coming across people quoting Habakkuk 2.14 wrong saying things like “one day the Glory will cover the earth… can’t wait for that!” but that is not what it says. Habakkuk says ‘The Knowledge of the Glory will cover the earth.’ The whole earth is already filled with His Glory, but people just can’t see it yet! Again Isaiah 40.5 says that ‘the Glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together…’

The Celtic Saints saw the natural world as being shot through with the Glory, the sacred thread of His divinity weaving through everything. When you look at creation with faith you start to see the pattern and framework of the Kingdom of God surrounding it and embedded within it. You can see Jesus, you can recognise His Presence. Justice, Love and Peace sing out and suddenly you have access to a Presence which changes situations. You stop seeing the negative and start seeing the answer.

It is amazing that He made a spectacle of the imposed principalities of darkness; lack, chaos, disorder. There is the underlying hidden framework of the Kingdom of God which overcame through Jesus Christ that we have access to.

“Aww that’s nice and quaint. But totally naive and deluded.”

Haven’t you watched the news?

The world is full of issues! Syrian civil wars, natural tragedies, a refugee humanitarian crises… There is darkness where the revelation of this Glory that covers the earth is not known or seen. The Kingdom of God is obscured. But it is still there, hidden. Until you see it! Then you can access it, release it, flow with it.

Don’t respond to this darkness by boycotting Starbucks because they havn’t put snowflakes on their red cups. Religion is deluded and definitely has a skewed perspective on life. Obsessed by the Bible but denying its power? The darkness of religion doesn’t bring light to the darkness of the world!

When the religious leaders looked at Mary washing the feet of Jesus with perfume (Luke 7.38) they looked and saw a notorious sinner, shame, guilt and a waste of expensive perfume yet Jesus looked and saw true worship, He saw the Kingdom and Glory at work. He then flowed with it, releasing freedom; forgiveness, love, compassion which set her free. Religion looks with criticism, Jesus looks with compassion. And isn’t it interesting that the Pharisees looked and failed to see the Messiah yet the prostitute looked and saw her saviour?!

The Gospel has Power and is the answer to suffering. True prophecy doesn’t deny suffering or ignores it, but looks with faith and sees answers. God close, not far off, His Kingdom here, Compassion, love, kindness; His Glory all around us.  It will provide keys to unlock situations of hopelessness. Naturally or supernaturally; a physical healing or a business plan.

That’s why we are called to be ‘in’ the world, like yeast in dough, catalysts for change because we have a different perspective, a different revelation. We can get a different strategy, a solution that comes from a Heavenly perspective. A new idea, some new crazy plan that no one else has thought of that brings transformation by uncovering a different Kingdom.

Don’t try building the Kingdom, see that it is already here.

Love this prayer from St. Patrick:

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

Reminder! Lucy Grimble | Leeds | Sat 21st Nov

Just a reminder that we have the amazing Lucy Grimble with us on Sat 21st Nov. Lucy is a really gifted and anointed worship leader based in London. She has lead worship at David’s Tent for several years and has released an EP. Her worship carries a real freedom and joy on it. We are really excited to have her with us!

Lucy Grimble | 21st Nov | Leeds

Hello! It has been a while since I posted anything! Here is a quick catch up; it has been a busy 6 or 7 months! We have been over to Copenhagen to minister to a Partners in Harvest church before the Summer. One of the things we went there to do was minister in healing and I ended up getting healed myself! One of the members of the church prayed for my arm which had been in pain since I had pulled a muscle moving house and I felt something lift off of it and the pain left! It hasn’t come back since. That was nice and unexpected!

We have seen quite a number of healings at Northern Glory over the last year or so and here is a testimony of one in particular: We were sharing about the Fire of the Holy Spirit at Northern Glory one evening before the Summer. I was talking about the Celtic Saints that lived in the North of England, in particular St Cuthbert, who was nicknamed ‘Fire of the North’. I was sharing how he carried such a strong Presence of God and Fire on him that he was known for this. As I was speaking it felt like that fire came in the room like pillars standing next to people.

One particular women needed healing from a trapped nerve and earlier in the night several people had prayed for her but she had not felt any improvement. Suddenly as we started talking about God’s Presence being like a pillar of Fire, she described feeling intense heat move down her body and instantly all the pain left her body! She was shocked as she had been in agony, it was amazing to see God move so powerfully, without anyone even praying for her!

We also took part in a healing and prophecy stall in Leeds, organised by our friends Jon and Lydia at a New Age Fair. We were perched in between a couple of tarot card readers and a masseuse.  We had a great time! The first lady I spoke to I did a dream interpretation for. Turns out she runs an event management company and asked if we would go and do training on dream interpretation at one of her events! We then met a guy who said he walks around events like this looking to see who has ‘the gift’ and who are frauds! He could see we were genuine and so he talked to us about his spirit guide and we were able to talk about ours! Then a lady came to find us because last year myself and someone else in the team had prayed for her for healing from recurring migraines. She said that since we had prayed she had not had another migraine since! Glory!

During the Summer we went to David’s Tent, a 3 day worship gathering on the South coast of England. It was so good, the worship popped each night in to another realm of freedom. Really excited about what God is doing through this worship movement; we believe that a new Move of the Spirit is starting to happen through it.

At the end of the Summer we hosted Crowder and Godfrey in Leeds for 2 nights. Was a great time, many people were impacted by the freedom and joy they experienced over these couple of days. We are having Godfrey back on the 18th Dec for a Northern Glory Christmas party! It may be fancy dress. We will tell Godfrey that anyway.

It has been interesting to watch some stuff unfold in the media over the course of the year which I felt God speak to me at various times. The rise in focus on women’s rights, in particular coverage of women’s sport has increased like the Women’s World Cup and it was also interesting to see the release of the film Suffragette which I felt a few years ago would be released as a sign of renewed interest in women’s rights. It has also been interesting to see various issues of corruption and abuse uncovered in the Police, something which I felt God show me at the start of the year and put out there. First issues were uncovered in South Yorkshire Police and then in the Metropolitan Police. I also said it would reach in to other places of authority and this has been the case as the corruption that has been uncovered has seemed to implicate West Minister. Read an article on the BBC about that HERE.

Think I may have also mentioned Messi moving to Chelsea… well looks like they need him more than ever now, who knows maybe a bit of delay on that word…?!🙂

Lucy Grimble | Sat 21st Nov | 7,30pm at St Matts

We have Lucy Grimble at Northern Glory on the 21st Nov. We first saw Lucy at David’s Tent last year, she carries the Presence of God and a real Spirit of Worship so we are excited about this! Tickets will be £5 and you can buy them on the door.

We feel worship is a key to opening up new experiences with God for the city and region. There are doors of opportunity open and waiting for the bold to take hold of them! Great days ahead.

Book review: Tales from the Couch by Dave Vaughan

I as well as many others had been encouraging Dave to write a book about his experiences and the journey he has gone on for some time now. I was very excited when Dave finally finished writing this and it doesn’t disappoint! Dave writes about his journey over his life, warts and all. He doesn’t try to make it fit a theological framework but expresses his heart.

What hits you is his vulnerability and honesty. He is not trying to persuade you of some theological belief system. Indeed it would be wrong to try and make a formula out of the experiences that Dave shares about in his book. He would not want that either, Dave says in it that it’s his journey and no one else’s.

Recently I read something by Lester Sumrall about Smith Wigglesworth’s last few years alive. He described how Smith’s ministry was not palatable, was offensive to many, was misunderstood even. Many found Smith too extreme to handle. At the time he was living, very few in the UK honoured him, forgetting the many dead raisings he had seen and the fact Smith had carried potentially the most powerful anointing to come out of the Uk in the last 100 years. What struck me about Smith’s life was the raw intensity of the Spirit that he carried, he didn’t fit the religious box, his ministry wasn’t polished, it didn’t have good PR. Despite all this he impacted the world. He was the real deal.

When reading Dave’s book you are struck by a level of rawness and reality. Dave has encountered God, he’s the real deal and his stories are not polished yet he has seen something. His book is an open doorway to encountering the
Glory to a greater degree.

We have a lot of good teaching out there, some great conferences but not many people who carry an ability to open the Body of Christ up to encounter God and bring people into a greater dimension of the Kingdom of God. That is what Dave carries and the spirit that is on his book. It has the ability to break open a new level of reality for you.

I love Dave’s honesty in his book. Sometimes too much of Christianity is about the party line and people are scared to really say what they think. Dave has never had this issue! You may not agree with all Dave says, I don’t! But that’s partly Dave’s point, he is on a journey as we all are, so go encounter God for yourself and have your own experiences. His book will definitely help open you up to a new level of encounter.

I think it does carry a spirit of reformation on it, challenging Christianity as a religion. But ultimately what you are left with is a sense of awe and wonder at a God who is bigger than we are and the religious boxes we try to fit Him in.

There’s so much more power in mystery than theology. I think that is what is at the crux of his book- mystery; mystery at a God who he has walked with over many years. You will walk away from reading it, scratching your head saying “did that really happen?” Tales from the Couch is honest, hilariously funny and filled with mystery.

Enjoy it and buy it here!

New Monasticism

There is a bit of a debate right now as to whether God can look upon sin. Did He hide His face away from humanity when we fell? Does He still hide is face now when we sin today?

Personally I think that it is pretty obvious when you look at the life of Jesus that He didn’t just ‘look upon sinners’ but hung out with them, invited himself to their house for dinner, and actually stopped them from being condemned by the law. In Matt 11 he is even accused of being a friend of sinners. So was Jesus God or not? Jesus planted Himself at humanity’s Ground Zero, where the very heart of corrupt sin reigned. His aim was simple: restore relationship. What a thought! God comes to meet with us and the main agenda on his heart is making friends. Sin for God is a case of lost relationship with us rather than the breaking of rules.

Jesus looked into the guilty and shame filled face of humanity with compassion. He didn’t look with an ignorance fuelled anger “why are you so bad? Why are you evil? You stupid people!” but with understanding. He understood their brokenness and mess, he understands why people are so messed up more than we know ourselves. He looked at the world as sheep without a shepherd; people without help, without Fathering or direction. He saw them as family.

But he didn’t just look longing to help but powerless to do anything, He took ownership of them, He saw them as His own and became their ‘Good Shepherd.’ He brought healing; He brought redemption. He fixes us.

Jesus was a Prophet, a Seer. Jesus looked at humanity but what did He see? The Psalmist writes in Psalm 139 (AMP):

My frame was not hidden from you
when I was being formed in the secret place,
intricately woven as if embroidered with various colours

in the depths of the earth, a region of darkness and mystery

16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
and in your book were written all the days of my life
before one of them came to be

Jesus knows humanity inside out. He was there at the forming of creation. He’s read your book and has seen the colours that have been woven together to form your life. So when He looks at a drug addict He sees a child of destiny and inheritance. He remembers the hope and dreams with which they were created in God’s Secret Place. He sees Judas and Peter weak and lacking character and gives them responsibility and leadership. A betrayer and denier!

It is an interesting thought that when Jesus looked at humanity He didn’t see ‘rebellion, sinner, prostitute, tax collector’ but sheep without a shepherd: People needing help and leadership.

Is it possible that an evangelical overemphasis in getting people to ‘pray the prayer’ and come to a Sunday meeting once a week means we are actually missing the point? Are we still trying to get people in to make our projects look successful or are we releasing the transforming  flow of the Presence of God right into the middle of their broken situations? Jesus walked right into the middle of people’s mess with an answer; with compassion and with Power. I think that this is what the genuine Apostolic looks like. The incarnation is God’s declaration that He will be with us in the midst of our trouble. He’s not hiding His face from sinners he can’t stand but peering right at humanity with a big grin in His face saying “I’m here, I’m with you, le me sort this out”.

Today when most pastors talk about their ‘flock’ they are not talking about the local council estate filled with heroin addicts or the red light district. They are talking about their middle class church attenders. Too often churches look from behind their church walls to ‘them’; ‘the world’ and occasionally venture out to do something good. This is not incarnational and I don’t believe it’s truly Apostolic.

But if we look at Celtic Monasticism and even the history of the parish church the flock was the local community, gasp even the ‘non-christians’! They were situated right in the middle of a local community at Ground Zero. The monastic settlements would take responsibility for all people around them, whoever that may have been; ‘sinners’, prostitutes, christians; feeding them, teaching them, healing them. It was the Apostolic in operation.

When you look at the lives of people like John Wesley this is what he did. On one occasion he was told that he wouldn’t last one minute in a particular area of Liverpool, which had the worst crime stats in the country at that time, where people were regularly murdered, poverty and child abuse was rife. He took up the challenge and went there with a few others and after two years it was independently reported that the area had completely turned around.  When you see the Hebridean Revival you see the Glory of God invading the middle of a normal community, in the middle of the high street. It was reported by several different sources that people were so affected by the reality of this supernatural experience that they went to the police station and collapsed in a heap outside because they didn’t know what else to do.

What I’m seeing is the emergence of a New Monasticism. By this I mean people who are situated right in the middle of the world; either because of where they are living – council estate, suburban paradise where ever, or  because of where they work. They will see the world with the Faith of God,  seeing God’s potential and honouring their original value; the value breathed into humanity in the depths of the earth. They will be able to deliver freedom into addictions and release healing to physical illness. They will shoot joy into hopelessness.

Their homes will be in the centre of chaotic communities and yet centres of Heaven on Earth, where the tangible Presence of God will be felt by believers and non believers alike. They will be carriers of God’s Presence themselves, releasing it at work, in schools, offices, parliament. These monastic centres and Apostles will just be your everyday houses and local people and yet they will be people saturated with the Glory. The Supernatural will be normal, unusual and mystical phenomena will overflow from these places and people.

The true marker of these New Monastic Centres will be the all consuming desire and love of the Presence of God. Awe and wonder at the mysterious mystical presence of Jesus will invade everything they are about. These centres will be pure, they will overflow with purity, releasing people from the mixture and corruption of sin.

Martin Scott once said that we need ‘Fathers and Mothers who are raising up Fathers and Mothers’. These Monastic Centres and Apostles will lift people out of mess and into places of freedom and leadership.

These will be the Lighthouses and Gatekeepers of society. They will be Teachers, Social workers and politicians. There will be an invasion of the music industry. These are the New Reformers, the New Monastics. It’s not some far off dream, it is genuinely already starting to happen.

Upcoming Events

We have John Crowder with us in Leeds  on the 6th and 7th Sept 2015. The venue is Ebor Court, Skinner Street, Leeds LS1 4ND. There will be three sessions – Sun eve 7pm, Mon afternoon 2 pm and Mon eve 7pm.

You can sign up for this gathering here!

The last mystical school we did with Crowder in Sheffield was literally crazy. Ronnie O’Sullivan, Protestors, strange manifestations by the bar and Devil Costumes made for an unusual ride!

We also have Godfrey Birtill on the 18th Dec and Lucy Grimble on the 20th Nov coming to Northern Glory in the Autumn which will be amazing!! More details to follow!

Over the last few months we’ve been very busy!! We’ve had several Northern Glorys, we’ve been to Copenhagen to minister to a Partners in Harvest Church there and done a New Age Fair in Leeds. This has produced lots of stories and in the next blog I’m going to share some of these stories including a woman who was healed through a pillar of fire, what happened when we met a man with a spirit guide and more!

Also I’m very excited by this new book! I’ll also be doing a review of Dave Vaughan’s book ‘Tales from the Couch: Memoirs of a Drunk Monk’ which you can order here! You can read a review of it by Martin Scott here.

Jesus did not appease God’s anger

mouthThomas Paine once wrote ‘Belief in a cruel God makes a cruel man’. It is really sad that some of the evangelical thinking about the Gospel has turned many people off God and Christianity. Many non-Christians encounter the core belief found within Evangelicalism, one celebrated this time of year; of an angry God, mad at humanity who had to vent his rage, eventually finding enjoyment in the murder of His own Son and are repulsed.

Disillusioned with this kind of thinking and the defensiveness displayed by the Evangelical wing once questioned about it, many have left Christianity in the search for something less sinister. Most do not even bother with it in the first place finding solice in more peaceful things like meditation, yoga or Zen Buddhism.

It is sad that most people do not even realise that the Penal Substitutionary Theory of Atonement, which depicts the wrath of an angry God coming down upon his own child is only one view of atonement among nine which express the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Penal Substitution is one of the most recent theories and was born in a time of legalism, cruelty and Empire as Britain sought to control the world through its ruthless reign.

Other theories throughout the last 2000 years of church history, theories which have never been labelled as heresy by the way, uphold the Goodness of God and focus on His forgiveness while avoiding Penal Substitution’s ‘cosmic child abuse.’ So while some people like Steve Chalk or others in America, have felt the brutal force of the Evangelical world by rejecting Penal Substitution, they would not be labelled as heretics by the Church Fathers, or by any Church Council that has  been organised over the last 2000 years.

He’s Good but not Theologically

One of the things that God has been revealing over the last 15 years is a revelation of His Glory, His ‘Goodness’ as Exodus 33 puts it; how Good God really is! Lots of charismatic ministries have focused on the Glory for some time, with places like Bethel in Redding even having Supernatural encounters with the Glory of God. It is no surprise then that theological structures like Penal Substitution which are at odds with a God who is ‘Good all the time’ (which instead depict an angry God) would start to buckle.

Many people have a relationship with a God who is ‘Good all the time’, who is loving and kind but yet have a theology which shows a God who was angry, filled with wrath and takes his temper out in His children.

There is a mismatch; a confusion going on here. Not only are people’s experiences of God kinder than their theology but people themselves are actually far kinder than it too!

Penal Substitution is actually at odds with what most Charismatic Christians actually think God is like. And yet because of a theological void within the Charismatic Church and the volume with which the Evangelical Church shouts, these Christians are not aware of these contradictions or that there is an alternative.

God is Good all the time. I can say that knowing it through a relationship with him and also through a theology which is filled with this revelation.

What is beginning to happen, and what will get stronger as time goes on is a gradual exodus of the church away from current evangelical thinking towards a more orthodox view of atonement. Many have already found refuge from the anger of the Evangelical Church in the Eastern Orthodox Church, people like Brad Jersak who I had the privilege of meeting a few years ago.

People will begin to discover a theology which doesn’t contradict God’s Goodness as Penal Substitution does but one that displays it as Orthodox Theology does.

This is part of a reformation that is happening in the Body of Christ.

The Gulf War: Word vs Spirit

Smith Wigglesworth, who saw his first healings in the city I live in, gave a famous prophecy about the power that will be released when the ‘Spirit and Word’ come together (Google it of you are not aware of it.) I don’t believe this is talking about young zealous Christians who are ‘into the Word and the Spirit brother’ but is talking about the gulf that has existed over the last few hundred years between theology and the manifestation of God’s Presence.

It has not just been a gulf but a war between theologians and the charismatics. Charismatic Christians couldn’t be in to ‘The Word’ or theology because they met a God in Penal Substitution who they didn’t like and didn’t know! Therefore they stuck to their experiences and allowed the gulf to exist between the Spirit and the Word  (so today most Charismatic Christians wouldn’t even know the term Penal Substitutionary Atonement Theory let alone realise their church adhered to it!) But yet Smith saw something of the potential Power of two streams coming together.

The gulf between the Presence and Theology has not been there within Church history. The founding Fathers of Christian Theology, people like St Thomas Aquinas, St Augustine, and Church Doctors like St Theresa of Avila were not just theologians; they were mystics and miracle workers. To get the title ‘saint’ they had to perform miracles; even some while they were dead! And we are not talking about a quick blessing over someone with a cold but extreme miracles like levitation, witnessed by hundreds of people. The early church theologians were known for their power and miracles. The theological revelation they walked in, that has stood for hundreds of years was matched by supernatural displays of power.

But yet for many Christians there is a mismatch. They have not been able to find the compassionate God that has been revealed to them in His Presence, within their own theology.

The mismatch is causing some to walk away, it is keeping others from entering in the first place. Many people who have had encounters with the love of God in a Supernatural way outside of a church context are completely turned off the Evangelical Church by its depiction of an anger filled, child beating deity.

However this is changing. Jesus is leading people down the ancient path, to encounter the Church Fathers of old, and to lay aside theological views which shut down the Presence of God for orthodox theology which reveals the Presence of a compassionate and loving Father, filled with kindness for His children, slow to anger and rich in love; a God who is for us, who reaches out towards us and has not hidden His face from us.

Jesus is leading people to the place where the two streams meet, the vision Smith saw years ago. A river of Power. No mismatch, just the revealing of His Glory.

I believe God is revealing just how Good He really is and this is at an unprecedented level. This is happening in a supernatural way – through the physical healings, supernatural encounters, through the miracles signs and wonders we are seeing but also in a theological way through the discovery of an orthodoxy which supports all this.

Our theology is catching up with our revelation of His Glory so that we can’t shut it down but release and display it to the world!

What i’m not saying is that everyone needs to join the Orthodox Church however. I’m saying that there is an older and more authentic version of the Gospel, a wine with more whack than we’ve known  which has been preserved by the Eastern Orthodox Church which is now being revealed.

So what does the Orthodox Church teach about God’s Goodness?

Jesus was not sent to appease the anger of a violent God. He had no need as the issue was not with God’s attitude towards us but our attitude towards God. So God did not pour out His anger against Jesus. It was not God who had turned His back on us because of our sin but humanity that rejected Him. It goes right back to Genesis; God searching out Adam who was hiding in the garden for fear of an anger that didn’t exist. This fear caused darkness to reign in the heart of man, blinding us from the Love of God. In this darkness His Goodness was hidden from us. But when the fullness of time came God came to walk with us again. Christ revealed the heart of the Father… When you have seen me you have seen the Father… Jesus sought out those infested with fear and invited Himself for dinner at their house, or spoke to them at the well, he stopped the religious from stoning them to death, healed them, or taught them to love their enemies.

But when we came face to face with the pure undiluted Love of God It was too much for our hatred to take. We murdered God and through this act, our ultimate rejection of God, God brought our Salvation.

Brad Jersak does a great presentation of this called the Gospel of Chairs:

When hanging on the cross the heart of God is fully revealed as Jesus declares “Father forgive them!” He did what we couldn’t do and loved those that hated Him.

The final act of Christ’s ministry was to prophetically decree Psalm 22 over humanity. It starts with ‘my God why have you forsaken me’ and ends with ‘It is finished’.  God did not hide his face from Jesus while he was on the cross; Psalm 22.24 even states this! ‘Neither has He hidden his face from Him but when He cried to Him He heard…’

The only anger God had was towards sin itself because it had corrupted His very image within His creation. We had forgotten where we had come from. So in the death of Christ we find our corrupted nature, our sinful self, the old man crucified with Christ and the New Creation raised to life and filled with Light. This is the true meaning of the word ‘wrath’ – ‘God’s love in action’- Christ was sent to stop the corruption of death and bring us to life… while we were dead in our sin…

Neither humanity nor Jesus was forsaken by God. He has been with us the whole time. This is the power of the Gospel; God with us, God for us, His Glory surrounding us, His love enveloping us.

An angry God hell bent on killing his Son? No. Instead on Good Friday we can remember God’s goodness that was revealed, his loving kindness, his forgiveness, His Glory, our redemption and acceptance within his Presence; in the face of our anger and rejection of Him.

Being a history maker?

11058444_10153154914035883_4023061946275637699_oOver the last few blogs I’ve talked about Union, the pattern of the Kingdom of God hidden within creation and the supernatural energy of God found in rest. There is a general theme that I’m getting at- that God is already here and around us and His Presence is found in rest. This is the Gospel!

In the following blog I am going to look at the idea of being a History Maker, which was a common prophecy give to a lot of people in the 90’s and whether it actually caused more harm than good.

First of all a quick catch up…

We had a great time with Godfrey Birtill at the at Northern Glory. We prayed for a women with shooting pains in her legs and as we prayed the pain left. She will be able to see if she is permanently healed over the next few weeks. I heard another cool healing testimony from our time ministering in Germany with our friends Florian and Clare Berndt in the Summer. We prayed for a guy who had had a stroke leaving the left hand side of him paralysed. After we prayed strength and movement returned to his leg and he was able to fully rest weight on it for the first time since the stroke, and so was also able to walk around. We found out from Florian recently that the healing has lasted and become permanent! Amazing! Some people dismiss the whack and yet in it there is supernatural power to see paralyzed people walk and broken bones healed.

Our next Northern Glory will be on 27th March, join the Facebook group, sign up to receive our regular emails or keep checking our events page to keep up to date.

I prophesied at the start of the year that there would be the uncovering of corruption in the Police ‘where those who should be defending the weak are doing the opposite’. This is beginning to happen already and various articles on the BBC yesterday were talking about how South Yorkshire Police ‘ignored hundreds of claims by young girls of sexual abuse in Sheffield’ and how an MP is calling for a full investigation to find out why these girls who needed defending were ignored.

Future History Makers?

In the 90s the idea of being a History maker was very popular. It is still around today in one form or another – One day i’m going to change the world! One day I’m going to be somebody! We are the generation to change nations and stand before kings… But this kind of idea can cause you to wait around longing for some future ‘revival/ big event/ destiny’ etc etc that will make you feel significant instead of enjoying normal life now. It can make us have a disdain for normal life today because we are wanting the thrill of this future destiny that will one day happen, far off when everything is sorted and perfect and yet this future History making destiny always eludes us like some shiny perfect looking carrot on a stick.

Is this history making destiny even the part of the Gospel?

Sometimes we want to get everything sorted and organised and together before we can be a History Maker. We plan out the meetings and church services, we have all our programs together. And then we are ready. You can Move now God. We press pause until it all seems ready. I’m glad this isn’t the plan found within the Gospel! Man God would never have come if he’d been waiting for us to get it all together. In fact Colossians says the opposite – While we were dead in our sin He made us alive!

The kind of ‘waiting until everything is perfect’ sort of thinking invades our lives with delay and can produce a mindset which idealises our destiny and puts off the things God wants to do for a later time. We can do the same with prophecy – you get an amazing prophecy about your destiny and you immediately stick it on the horizon for a time when you’re successful/ in revival/ got a Christian ministry/ best mates with Bill Johnson and fail to look at the Now and discover God’s Presence in the Present.

It avoids dealing with reality for some future fantasy.

I think that this highlights a misunderstanding of Prophecy and the identity of Christ as the fulfillment of the prophetic word. Real Prophecy should be ‘active’ causing a real shift or reaction in the ‘Now’.

Rather than providing a bit of escapism to a life we don’t like true prophecy should give us power to face reality and overcome difficult circumstances.

This is because Jesus is the Prophetic Word made Flesh. He is the physical answer to the Old Testament Prophetic Words but also every other prophetic word ever given. The incarnation brought fulfillment to the prophetic word through bringing it to life and giving it flesh and bones.  This was a permanent thing for all prophecy. Galatians 4.4 says that Christ came at the fullness of time so there is no delay or waiting around for fulfillment, he already came bringing fulfillment to prophecy within the fullness of time.

So when you prophecy with Christ in you,  the words should release substance, they should be a catalyst to the Now.

Distance and Delay causes us to have spiritual blindness to what God is doing in front of us, we get long sightedness meaning we miss whats literally right in front of us because we’re too concerned with what we think is coming in the future, rather than what we have already been given in the now!

History makers?

If we misunderstand real Prophecy and the identity of Christ as the fulfillment of Prophecy we can think it is down to our efforts to try to be a History Maker and bring about the fulfillment of those prophecies.

Our destiny is found in the journey rather than the destination. The journey takes unusual twists and turns and we can end up in random places which seem contrary to where we thought our ‘destiny’ was going to take us. Man imagine the responsibility of God’s ‘Plan A’ from before the foundation of the world resting on Mary and Joseph as they roll in to Bethlehem. Joseph, confronted by 50 different Inns has no idea which one is the ‘right one’. Beads of sweat dripping down his forehead as he feels the pressure of being a history maker slipping away as each Inn reject them… which one is the right one for the Messiah to be born in??!

Its probably best they didn’t have a clue!

The destination of the stable seemed totally random and it was the person with them that gave it significance. The real purpose, the real thing that mattered, the destiny of humanity was with them the whole time, probably asleep in Mary’s womb – Emmanuel! God was with them bringing significance to the randomness and the stuff which seemed  insignificant. History was made out of the twists and turns of their unpredictable journey through the very presence of God in their midst. History is made in the present!

Is it possible that sometimes ‘prophecy’ works against us actually fulfilling it? Maybe it has been prophesied that I will be a history maker today, but what if I leave the house at the wrong time and walk too quickly to the bus stop and miss the divine connection that would have made me a history maker? What if I was supposed to evangelise the guy who just walked passed me and because I didn’t stop him God will hold me accountable for the fact he just walked into a lamp post?

The anxiety of making a mistake which will cause you to miss your destiny can paralyse you into not actually doing anything!

Hebrews says ‘Today if you hear my voice’. There’s something about enjoying God’s presence in the now and letting history write itself.

Learning from the Best

I love Jesus, He seemed to just stumble into situations filled with Glory and the Holy Spirit and let stuff unfold around him. Consider the crowd around him mobbing him, he bumps into a women who grabs his garments and gets physically healed. I love Luke 7 where Jesus, followed by  a massive entourage of people, descend on a random insignificant town called Nain (never heard of it). Having seen some incredible things and in the middle of a chaotic move of God filled with the supernatural they run into a funeral procession. History stumbles into greatness as the man is raised from the dead, the miracle grips the town in awe and wonder and the story is spread all over the entire region even reaching John the Baptist who was blown away by what he heard.

How much better is it to discover the Presence of God in the Now and let history be made around you.

How do you fulfill prophecies in your life?

Jesus is the fulfillment of the Prophetic Word. Within His very nature was fulfillment of all the Old Testament prophecies. So as He walked around 1st C Judea he didn’t need to stress about making the ‘right’ decision. Fulfillment was found within His identity. And the same is true for us. You are seated in Christ, in fulfillment, in the fullness of time! You are seated in your destiny – Jesus. Fulfillment of prophetic words is found in the discovery of where we are seated. But not just that, who we’ve been United to – you have been united to the Word made Flesh, the fulfillment of Prophecy Himself.

We have also been given the fullness of the Godhead. Jesus knew this and so as he wandered around, this fullness simply leaked out of Him.  It invaded the region and caused carnage, turning curses into blessings. Whenever he met people His Presence intoxicated them. It shone out of Him and enveloped them within His Glory. It made them significant. This is what the the true Tabernacle of David looks like. It is People, intoxicating the world with the fragrance of Christ. Saturated with His Presence, people who effortlessly are the fulfillment to prophetic words by carrying the fullness of God into random situations. They make the insignificant moments into History.

Jesus is History. He is the beginning and the end, the author and perfecter of our salvation. He fills All in All and makes everything complete, filling everything everywhere with Himself! Ephesians 1.23

So don’t try and be a history maker. Enjoy the surprises of an unpredictable journey with God and discover Him in the most random situations to let history unfold around you.

Look out for the next blog where I will be sharing some personal stories of the supernatural where God has invaded random situations causing amazing things to happen!
