What was “IT” that Jesus Finished?

Christ is the Overcomer, the Anointed One and He is in You. Believe who you are, You are the Sons of God, a Royal Priesthood, filled with the Oil of the Overcomer.

For 2000 years followers of Christ have been trying to grapple with the consequences of the cross. What did Jesus mean when He made the simple declaration “It is finished”? It takes the intoxication of the New Wine to help us believe a message so scandalous it seems too good to be true. This is good news! This is the Finished Work of the Cross.

The purpose of the New Testament, in fact the entire Bible, was to show you that your efforts in attaining righteousness, are futile! Your efforts in climbing the ladder up to heaven, in making yourself right with God again, in restoring what was lost through the fall DO NOT WORK. You CANNOT make yourself righteous. Do you realise that there are whole books written in the New Testament urging believers to avoid this heresy and ‘bewitchment’? Why do the NT writers desperately try to get us to understand this? Because THIS IS THE GOSPEL!

I grew up in church and believed that entrance into Heaven was 1. Believing in Jesus and 2. Down to whether I had been a good person or not. Did I follow the 10 Commandments? Did I sin today? Did I invest in my relationship with God today? All the emphasis was on ME and MY ability to maintain a good Christian life and relationship with God. If I had done well I would be rewarded. “Well done little Philip, you tried so hard and worked so tirelessly to make yourself Holy. You never ceased in making yourself a better person through discipleship. You even fasted to prove to me that you love me. You worked hard, serving and through all this I can see you are a good person. Here have a place in Heaven for your effort…” UH Heresy!

Why? Galatians 2.21: “I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” NIV

“21 I do not frustrate the grace of God; for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” King James 21st C Version

“21 I don’t ignore the grace of God, because if we become righteous through the Law, then Christ died for no purpose.” Common English Bible

“21 [Therefore, I do not treat God’s gracious gift as something of minor importance and defeat its very purpose]; I do not set aside and invalidate and frustrate and nullify the grace (unmerited favor) of God. For if justification (righteousness, acquittal from guilt) comes through [observing the ritual of] the Law, then Christ (the Messiah) died groundlessly and to no purpose and in vain. [His death was then wholly superfluous.]” Amplified Bible

Its not doing good stuff that makes you holy. I believed that it was my efforts that made me right with God. My own striving to make myself a better Christian was inadvertently sticking the middle finger up at God and saying that the death of Christ had no purpose and was in vain. Wow, God is so gracious!

Lets just go through and see what it is that Christ has actually accomplished for us.

Did you know that you have been justified, past tenseand have (present tense) peace with God through Jesus Christ and that you now (present tense) stand in the Grace of Jesus Christ? And this was before you did anything! Just to show I didn’t make that up:

Romans 5.1+2: Therefore, since we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us [grasp the fact that we] have [the peace of reconciliation to hold and to enjoy] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Through Him also we have [our] access (entrance, introduction) by faith into this grace (state of God’s favor) in which we [firmly and safely] stand. And let us rejoice and exult in our hope of experiencing and enjoying the glory of God.

Even the NIV is pretty clear on it:

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”

How can you add any more to what God has done through your own effort?

Trying to act like a righteous person doesn’t make you righteous. Acting like a good christian does not make you good. It is an upside down Kingdom. Realising and believing that HE made you Righteous and Holy first will cause you to stop sinning as a fruit! Running around trying to fulfill the law in our own strength looks ridiculous to God and makes a mockery of the cross. You are seated in the fulfillment of the law. Believe it, and you will see it bear fruit in your life.

I believed I was a sinner trying to get holy and clean. However it is precisely through believing the Gospel that you begin to act like the person He made you.

What does justified mean? Aquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God. It was while we were dead in our sin, powerless and dirty, selfish and loving evil that Christ died for us and through His blood, were justified with Christ. It is time we caught up with what God has done. (It says that in Romans 5.6-11 in case you think I’m making that one up). Here it is just in case:

6-8 He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him. 9-11 Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. (The Message)

So what exactly has happened? We have been justified by Christ. How? We have died with Him. Romans 6 3-8:

Are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His deathWe were buried therefore with Him by the baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious [power] of the Father, so we too might [habitually] live and behave in newness of life. For if we have become one with Him by sharing a death like His, we shall also be [one with Him in sharing] His resurrection [by a new life lived for God]. We know that our old (unrenewed) self was nailed to the cross with Him in order that [our] body [which is the instrument] of sin might be made ineffective and inactive for evil, that we might no longer be the slaves of sin. For when a man dies, he is freed (loosed, delivered) from [the power of] sin [among men]. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him. (Amplified)

AND

Galatians 2.20: 20 I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ.

So when Jesus died, we died. What else has Jesus accomplished? When He was raised to life, so were you! Can you raise yourself back to life when you are dead? No and I don’t recommend trying. We have been resurrected with Christ AND Seated with Him on a throne.

Ephesians 2.4-6: “He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by God’s grace! And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus.

I like the AMP version: “And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).” Shiggy Baba!

SO you have also been (Past tense) seated on a throne (cool) with Christ in Heaven.

AND Colossians 3.1-3  “Therefore, if you were raised with Christ, look for the things that are above where Christ is sitting at God’s right side. Think about the things above and not things on earth. You died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

So lets summarise what has been accomplished by Christ so far: We have been justified, died, have been resurrected with Him and seated on a throne. So what does this mean?

He has taken us to Eden, to bliss and a life jacked up on Jesus. Christ has made all things new- that’s you! Our default position has been re-set from ‘curse’ to ‘paradise’. This is the Christian life- Its a party!

What else have we got? Hows about every Spiritual Blessing in the Heavenlies. (Ephesians 1.3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

Christ died so we could have the fullness. If this is getting too much, lets have a bit of  Common English: “All the fullness of deity lives in Christ’s body. 10 And you have been filled by him, who is the head of every ruler and authority.” Colossians 2.9.

Have we got anything else? Uh how about the whole world. You are an Heir to the Promise given to our Father Abraham! Romans 4.13: It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

[And just as a side note what did He do with the Devil? 1 John 3.8 says ‘The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work’. Ephesians 1.22 says ‘God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church’. 1 Corin 15.27 says the same thing. Colossians 2.15 says ‘Stripping the rulers and authorities of their power, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by means of the stake.’ So we can see quite clearly that Jesus defeated the devil too.]

Colossians 2.10-15 does a nice summary of the whole lot, in case we are struggling:

All the fullness of deity lives in Christ’s body. And you have been filled by him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11 You were also circumcised by him. This wasn’t performed by human hands—the whole body was removed through this circumcision by Christ. 12 You were buried with him through baptism and raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead because of the things you had done wrong and because your body wasn’t circumcised, God made you alive with Christ and forgave all the things you had done wrong. 14 He destroyed the record of the debt we owed, with its requirements that worked against us. He canceled it by nailing it to the cross.15 When he disarmed the rulers and authorities, he exposed them to public disgrace by leading them in a triumphal parade.

Jesus is the OVERCOMER, the Anointed One, and He has OVERCOME for YOU! Not only did He kill you off, resurrect you and seat you but He lives in you and He has filled you with the same Messianic oil that is in Him. He has anointed you with the Oil of the Overcomer. This is a Royal Oil that smells of victory. 1 John 2.27 says ‘the anointing which you received from Him abides in you’. He has made you a walking Open Heaven, a SON with a pure royal bloodline. Don’t try and open the Heavens, He already did and gave us access to God’s supernatural power- its a free gift!

The NT keeps telling us ‘believe what He has done! Believe who you are! Believe, believe, believe!’. The reason we might not feel like all this is true is because we don’t believe it. We are not walking in this because we don’t believe it and so we are not seeing this truth manifest. Faith is a gift (1 Corin 12.) and I think it is time we opened our eyes, took a look around and realised what we have on offer and what we are capable of.

So I think that is some of what Jesus meant when He said “It is Finished”. Our efforts were never even required. All of creation is cranking its head in your direction for a peek at the unveiling, the manifestation of your true identity. Even the angels want to have a look!
